Bruce Nauman Exhibit

Image
One of the reoccurring things that I have seen in Nauman's work are how he shows the simplicity of our everyday lives. At the "100 lives and dies",  it shows that we could do anything we want, but we are still going to experience death eventually. It basically is just saying to live everything to the fullest because one of those days, death is going to come knocking.

Surrealism

The roots of surrealism were from Europe between the times of the end of World War I and the start of World War II. During this time, artists wanted to make art that was unrestricted to the normal styles, like Dadaism. This in turn caused a new art-form which is based off of multiple styles from the Romanticism period, as well as Dadaism. Surrealist artists worked to access their unconscious minds to make their art by using what they vividly remember from their dreams and recording trans states. Surrealism drew inspiration from previous cultures from different countries which had a huge contrast to their own culture.

Impressionism and Post Impressionism

Image
Impressionism is an art style based on imitating what the artist sees in real life. This swayed away from the art before this style in a way that it reflects what actually is seen rather than having an exaggeration of it. In this painting Woman with a Parasol  by Claude Monet, he paints a portrait of his wife and son and adjusted the painting as the time of day was changing with the clouds having a slight movement as well as the shadows. Post-Impressionism was created to sway away from the era of impressionism that was set in place. These artists didn't care about painting what the human eye can see, but instead make a interpretation of what it actually is. One famous piece of art that was made by a post-impressionist was Starry Night  by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting shows his interpretation of what he views from his asylum room. Its similar to what it is in real life, but he uses multiple shades of blue for the image as well as using his brush in strokes to give his p...

Rembrandt

1. Rembrandt painted a portrait of a fur merchant named Nicolaes Ruts. He was a Russian businessman who was dealing with furs. Rembrandt portrayed Ruts in the portrait as one of wealthy and successful status. He is covered up with an expensive fur coat, which shows his business and status. It also shows that his left hand is holding a piece of paper and his right hand is resting on a red piece of furniture. He is called "the business man's hero' because he is what all businessmen want to be: successful. The way he wears his merchandise shows that he is wealthy enough to flaunt his own wears as well as advertise it shows how good of a business man he is. 2. The portrait of the 83 year old woman shows the mood of  a gloominess, loneliness, vulnerability. Rembrandt creates the mood of this portrait by having a dark background with the dark clothes, as well as having her eyes look down shows that she feels some type of sorrow and probably mourns for someone. 3. In Rembrand...

Design Elements and Principles

Image
1. There are several ways that artists unify their artwork. Some ways are by size, shape, repeating colors, textures, lines, etc. In Starry Night , Vincent Van Gogh unifies the piece by using a limited range of colors as well as having each part of the painting made in similar brush strokes. The tone of this piece is cool and serene and the shades of blue for the sky enhance the tone. 2. Asymmetrical balance is when balance is made in the artwork without its focus being symmetrical. An artist can create asymmetrical balance by distributing its visual weight using certain colors and objects on each side. In this art piece, the artist has one giant tree on the right side, while the left side has multiple trees that are smaller but it doesn't take the image away from its balance; it in fact keeps it together. 3. Scale can change the meaning of an artwork by making a great emphasis on an object. The reason behind that is to give viewers a certain perception. This art piece is ma...

About Me

My name is Ricardo and I am a accounting major. I am 20 years old, I was born in brooklyn, but I am part Panamanian and part Honduran. I've been at LaGuardia for at least a year and basically my current routine is wake up, school, work, home, then sleep and repeat. But in my free time I like to play video games and hang out with friends and family. I've always liked art and creating art just about as much as I like playing the piano and listening to music. So when I chose this class, I took the chance to experience art some more. My future goal is to have a bachelor's degree, a double major with Computer Science, and to help pay of my family's debts.
